Christine Schraner Burgener, State Secretary

Born in Meiringen in the Canton of Bern in 1963, Christine Schraner Burgener earned her law degree from the University of Zurich in 1988 and shortly thereafter began working for the Horgen District Court. She joined the Diplomatic Service of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) in 1991 and was posted to Swiss missions in Morocco, Ireland, Thailand and Germany. At FDFA headquarters in Bern, she held the positions of Deputy Head of the Directorate of International Law, Head of Secretariat of the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission (IHFFC) and Head of the Counter-Terrorism Coordination Section. From 2009 to 2015, she served as Swiss Ambassador to Thailand. Until 2012, this position was shared with her husband Christoph Burgener, who was also Switzerland’s Ambassador to Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. In 2015, she was appointed as Swiss Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany and in 2018 became the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Myanmar, holding the rank of Under-Secretary-General.

Since 1 January 2022, Ambassador Christine Schraner Burgener has become State Secretary to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).

Christine Schraner Burgener is the mother of two grown children. She speaks German, French, English and Japanese.
