The International Institute of Humanitarian Law IIHL is an independent, non-commercial humanitarian organisation that was founded in 1970 and is based in Sanremo in Italy.
The Institute aims to promote global understanding for international humanitarian law and offers courses on the law of armed conflict, migration law and the law on refugees. The courses are primarily aimed at government officials, politicians, military personnel and members of academia.
Switzerland has funded courses on international refugee and migration law since 2011. In addition, SEM funds ad-hoc workshops for partner states as required.
SEM thus contributes to the basic and continuing education and training of government officials from various countries of origin and transit on the subjects of migration, asylum and statelessness. The courses help to develop asylum and admission systems that are based on international standards of protection.
